What is sealing and whaling?


It means catching seals and using their fur to sell for good money and whaling is the same thing but they were wanting whales to use in oils.













How did whalers kill whales?


They fired a harpoon to the whale when they spotted it and the whale would drag the vessel until it was exhausted.

A harpoon is a long spear that is attached to a long rope.

A vessel is a ship.


How did sealers kill seals?


They used firearms or hakapiks which is a heavy woooden club with a hammer head and a metal hook at the end.

What did ‘hunters’ gain from seals and whales?


Seals - They used the seals fur to sell for money and also their bones.


Whales - They used whales for oil and also their bonese.













Which areas did whalers and sealers congregate?


Seals were found in the new zealan mainland and the Antipodes, Auckland, bounty, campbell, chatham and smears islands.


Whalers found whales in kaikora.












What nationality were most sealers and whalers?


Maori, french, American, European.

Art

 All of the students in tangaroa have been making self portraits. I have been working on mine for the past week and i trying to finish it off today. I did a whole page of plants withj eyes and a mouth because i really like plants. Here is a picture of mine half done.
